"Lord, make seeing eyes blind," Andrew prayed as two border guards emerged from the guardhouse and asked him to step out of his car. One guard opened Andrew's suitcase. As he moved aside some shirts, there in plain view were the gospel tracts. Andrew's palms grew clammy. A person carrying such material would be arrested on the spot.

When he became God's smuggler, Brother Andrew was already familiar with risk. As a boy, the intrepid Andrew van der Bijl joined the Dutch Resistance against the Nazi occupation. As a young man, he fought eagerly in the Dutch East Indies - until the horror of war turned the adventure seeker to a life of alcohol and desperation.

Redeemed by God, the Dutchman became a daring messenger of hope, smuggling Scripture through closed borders and equipping persecuted Christians behind the Iron Curtain. Today the ministry of Open Doors continue to shine the light of Christ in the world's darkest places (1928-2022).

This best-selling, missionary biography series - Christian Heroes: Then & Now - chronicles the exciting, challenging, and deeply touching true stories of ordinary men and women whose trust in God accomplished extraordinary exploits for His kingdom and glory.

Brother Andrew’s story completely drew me in. Known as “God’s Smuggler,” he risked his life to bring Bibles into countries where Christianity was banned, trusting God again and again in impossible situations. What impacted me most was his faith and dependence on prayer. Some of the moments where guards searched right past Bibles in plain sight were incredible reminders that God is sovereign over every detail. This book is adventurous, faith-building, and such a powerful example of courage and trust in the Lord. It also opened up meaningful conversations about persecuted believers and the importance of God’s Word. I can’t recommend the Christian Heroes Then & Now series enough; the stories truly stay with you. *I received a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
